SPS : Surge Protections System
Centrifugal compressors need control and protection systems to avoid the surge during operation. The surge may have destructive behaviour and happens when the compressor operative point matches the surge limit line (SLL).
The actual centrifugal compressors protection systems are based on simplified protection algorithms and provide a partial and limited protection. Actual algorithms are not able to detect variations of the suction condition and the protection action remains linked to the design conditions even when these are not more actual. In such situations the protection action may become inefficient and the damaging of the compressor is possible.
Many of the actual systems provide an approximate protection through simplified algorithms based on few operative parameters (suction flow and pressure, discharge pressure). These systems provide a limited surge protection.
IPC SPS is a new advanced and integrated control and protection system for centrifugal compressors. SPS system allows to overcame the actual protection system limitations and achieve optimal surge protection in every operative condition, even in case of gas molecular weight changes. The machine protection is assured in the overall operational range and in any off design inlet condition.
